What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is a health care approach that emphasizes the spine, in order to effect general health via the nervous system.
Chiropractic care can help several imbalances in the body including:
- Lower back, neck and shoulder pain
- Arm and leg pain
- Sports injuries
- Repetitive stress injuries (RSI)
- Pregnancy-related conditions
- Stress-related conditions
How Does It Work?
There is no process, experience, or movement in your body which is not controlled by the nervous system.
Your immune system, your digestion, and all other systems are reliant on a free and functioning nervous system for maintenance of health and balance.
With chiropractic adjustments, stress is released from the spine. While many people joke about getting “cracked”, the popping sounds heard in an adjustment indicate that the joints are being released. This is safe as the original motion of the spine is merely restored by stretching and relaxing the muscles surrounding the joints in order to improve circulation. In this process, scar tissues and muscle adhesions are disturbed which can result in temporary soreness as a result of the treatment. As the motion is restored to the joints, circulation and hydration prevent decay in the spine.
We also offer techniques that do not involve cracking, primarily with an activator.
What to Expect From Your First Visit
First we will have you update us on your current health status. An exam is performed to make sure that you do not need a referral to another specialty. Then we will see how well your spine moves and how you are holding your body. In the case of acute pain, we will do what we can to make you comfortable. X-rays are not required, and it is typical for a patient to be adjusted on their first office visit. If the results that you are seeking are not achieved in three visits, we have Physical Therapists, Acupuncturists, and Massage Therapists for you to consider as adjuncts to the care here in the office.
Chiropractic continues to be very popular for pain relief; however there is an increasing body of peer reviewed literature backing it's utility, efficacy, and safety. So you really don't have to "believe" in it for it to work. We also offer techniques that do not involve "cracking" primarily Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique (www.activator.com for more info).
