Whiplash is a soft tissue injury caused by rapid acceleration-deceleration of the head — most commonly from a rear-end collision, but also from sports contact, a fall, or any sudden impact. The cervical spine is forced beyond its normal range of motion, straining muscles, ligaments, and joint capsules. The result is neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and often a dull ache that radiates into the shoulders and upper back. Symptoms sometimes don't appear until 24–48 hours after the incident.
Dr. Robert Townsend, DC has treated whiplash injuries in Oakland's Glenview neighborhood for 17 years. Chiropractic adjustments restore normal cervical joint motion, reduce muscle guarding, and address the mechanical dysfunction that keeps whiplash pain from resolving on its own. Most patients are adjusted on their first visit.
